PCI AI offers three certifications for people who plan, control, finance and lead projects: PCL-AI (Project Controls Leader), PFL-AI (Project Finance Leader) and PML-AI (Project Management Leader – AI). They share one exam format, so much of the preparation is common — but each has a distinct body of knowledge, and the best study plan reflects that.
This guide sets out the facts, a shared preparation method, an eight-week plan for each credential, and technique for scenario-based questions.
The facts that shape your preparation
According to PCI AI (opens in a new tab), each certification:
- has a 90-minute exam, taken fully online;
- is scenario-based, with AI governed throughout;
- requires 65% to pass;
- has a USD 350 exam fee;
- is valid for three years, with recertification rules published on PCI AI's site.
PCI AI describes PCL-AI as open to anyone with three years' experience, in any field. Before you start studying, read the eligibility requirements, exam structure, body of knowledge and sample questions on PCI AI's site — they are the authoritative sources, and your plan should map directly to them.
What the facts imply for study:
- Ninety minutes is not long. Scenario questions take reading time. Speed comes from fluency with concepts, not from rushing.
- Scenario-based means applied. Expect to choose the best action or interpretation in a situation, not just recall a definition.
- AI is governed throughout. Expect scenarios that test when AI use is appropriate, how outputs should be validated and who is accountable — in every domain, not in a separate chapter.
The shared method: MAP-PRACTISE-REVIEW
1. MAP (week 1). Turn the official body of knowledge into a checklist. Rate each topic: 0 = new to me, 1 = know it, can't apply it confidently, 2 = apply it at work. Your study time goes to the 0s and 1s.
2. PRACTISE (weeks 2–7). For each topic: learn the concept, work a numerical or scenario example by hand, then answer scenario-style questions under light time pressure.
3. REVIEW (continuous). Keep an error log: question topic, why you got it wrong (concept gap, misread, calculation slip, poor option elimination), and the fix. Revisit it weekly. Spaced review beats rereading — see Spaced repetition and active recall for professional exams.

PFL-AI study plan: Project Finance Leader
Scope: project finance, financial modelling, capital structure, bankability, coverage ratios (DSCR, LLCR, PLCR), PPP and concession structures, financial close and AI-enabled analysis.
| Week | Focus | Practice task |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Map the body of knowledge; baseline self-assessment | Rate every topic 0/1/2 |
| 2 | Project finance fundamentals: SPV, non-recourse debt, contract chain | Draw a structure diagram for a real project you know |
| 3 | Financial modelling: CFADS, timing, circularity, model integrity | Build a simple annual CFADS model |
| 4 | Capital structure and debt sizing | Size debt to a target minimum DSCR with sculpted repayments |
| 5 | Coverage ratios: DSCR, LLCR, PLCR and reserve accounts | Calculate all three and explain what each tells a lender |
| 6 | PPP and concession structures, risk allocation, payment mechanisms | Work an availability-payment deduction (guide) |
| 7 | Bankability, financial close, AI-enabled analysis and its governance | List the checks you would run on an AI-generated sensitivity analysis |
| 8 | Mixed timed practice and error-log review | Two timed sets; fix the top three error patterns |
Free support: Project Finance and Financial Modelling.
PML-AI study plan: Project Management Leader – AI
Scope: governance, planning, execution, agile and hybrid delivery, and AI-enabled project management.
| Week | Focus | Practice task |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Map the body of knowledge; baseline self-assessment | Rate every topic 0/1/2 |
| 2 | Governance: roles, decision rights, stage gates, reporting | Draw the governance structure of a project you know and critique it |
| 3 | Planning: scope, schedule, cost, resources, stakeholders | Produce a one-page plan for a realistic project |
| 4 | Execution: team leadership, communication, change, quality | Write a change-control decision memo |
| 5 | Agile and hybrid delivery | Score workstreams with the FIT-5 model (guide) |
| 6 | Risk, issues and benefits | Build a prioritised risk register with owners and responses |

Technique for scenario-based questions
Use the READ-RULE-RANK routine:
- READ the last line first. Know whether you are asked for the best action, the first action, the most likely cause or the correct calculation before reading the scenario.
- RULE out options that break a principle. Options that bypass governance, ignore accountable people, use AI outputs without validation or change a baseline without approval are usually wrong, however efficient they sound.
- RANK the remaining options. Prefer actions that gather evidence before acting, address root causes rather than symptoms, and involve the right decision-maker.
For calculation questions, write the formula first, then substitute. Most errors in earned value and coverage-ratio questions come from swapped terms (EV ÷ AC versus AC ÷ EV) rather than arithmetic.
Where structured practice helps
Self-study works, but many candidates benefit from a structured question bank and feedback. Certuvo (opens in a new tab) offers preparation for all three PCI AI certifications — PCL-AI, PFL-AI and PML-AI — alongside its other exam-prep programmes. Certuvo's exam-style questions are written and verified by qualified professionals and mapped to the official blueprint, then expanded with personalised AI practice, with every question validated by four independent AI judges. Its AI Coach uses a Socratic approach ("teach you to think, not memorize") and is automatically disabled during mock exams, so your timed practice reflects exam conditions. See our Certuvo partner page and our guide on how to use an AI study coach effectively.
For exam technique that applies to any credential, Optimize All's free course Professional Certification Exam Success is a good companion. The PCI AI partner page summarises the three credentials.
The final week
- Do not learn new topics in the last three days; consolidate.
- Take one full timed practice session at the same time of day as your exam.
- Check your online exam setup — computer, connection, quiet room, identification — well before exam day, following PCI AI's instructions.
- Review your error log, not your whole notes.
Frequently asked questions
Which PCI AI certification should I take first?
Choose by role. PCL-AI suits planners, schedulers, cost engineers and controls leads; PFL-AI suits people in project finance, modelling, lending or PPP roles; PML-AI suits project and programme managers leading delivery. Check PCI AI's certification roadmap and eligibility requirements.
How long should I study for a PCI AI exam?
It depends on your experience with the body of knowledge. The eight-week plans above assume around five to seven hours a week for someone with relevant work experience; add time for topics you rate as new.
Are the PCI AI exams open book?
Check PCI AI's exam structure and candidate rules for the current conditions. Prepare as if you will rely on your own understanding, because scenario questions reward fluency.
Does Certuvo prepare candidates for all three PCI AI exams?
Yes. Certuvo offers preparation for PCL-AI, PFL-AI and PML-AI, as well as for CIA, CISA, CMA, CPA, CFA, PMP, NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN.
How long is a PCI AI certification valid?
Three years. PCI AI publishes recertification requirements on its site.
