What changed — and what didn't

Searchers now meet generated answers alongside classic results: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot in Bing, and assistants with web search such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. These systems retrieve pages, summarise them and usually cite a handful of sources.

For Google specifically, the official position is unusually clear. Search Central's guide to optimising for generative AI features (published May 2026) says these features are built on the same crawling, indexing and ranking systems as Search, and that "AEO" or "GEO" is, in practice, still SEO. The same guide tells site owners they can ignore several fashionable tactics: creating llms.txt files for Google, "chunking" content into fragments, rewriting pages in an "AI style", and chasing inauthentic mentions across the web.

It also explains query fan-out: for complex questions the model issues a set of concurrent, related searches and combines the results. A deep, genuinely useful page can therefore be cited because it answers one of those sub-questions, even if it does not match the user's exact wording.

The takeaway is not "mentions replace links". It is that being genuinely referenced — with or without a hyperlink — now shows up in more places, and the old separation between "link building" and "PR" makes even less sense.

What Google says not to do

  • Inauthentic mentions. Seeding your brand name across low-quality blogs, forums or comment sections to influence answers is the mention-era equivalent of link spam. Google's guidance calls it out explicitly.
  • Manipulating AI responses. Since May 2026 Google's spam documentation states that techniques aimed at manipulating generative AI responses in Search fall under its spam policies. Paying for "guaranteed AI citations" or planting self-serving "best X" lists on third-party sites is covered by the same rules as paid links and site reputation abuse.
  • Fake consensus. Networks of sites that all "recommend" the same brand are a pattern, whatever the format.

An earned-presence plan

  1. Be the source. Original data, clear methodology and named experts give journalists, bloggers and retrieval systems a reason to reference you (see the linkable assets lesson).
  2. Show up where your buyers read. Trade publications, respected review sites, professional communities, podcasts and YouTube channels your audience actually uses.
  3. Make your entity unambiguous. One official name, consistent descriptions, an About page with founders and credentials, and Organization structured data with sameAs links to your official profiles:
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "name": "Northgate Accountants",
  "url": "https://www.northgate.example/",
  "logo": "https://www.northgate.example/logo.png",
  "sameAs": ["https://www.linkedin.com/company/northgate-example",
             "https://www.youtube.com/@northgate-example"]
}
  1. Convert mentions into links where it helps readers (unlinked mention outreach, later in this course).
  2. Keep facts current. Out-of-date prices or policies get repeated by answer engines; fix them at the source.

Measuring AI visibility honestly

  • Search Console. Clicks and impressions from AI features are part of the normal Web search type totals. Google's Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites by the end of August 2026, adds impressions for AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover, broken down by page, country, device and date. Metrics are still being added — check the current Search Console help before building dashboards on it.
  • GA4 referrals from assistants. Create a custom channel group (Admin → Data display → Channel groups) with a channel "AI assistants" where Session source matches a regex such as:
(^|\.)(chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai)$

Place it above "Referral" so it takes precedence. Note that clicks from Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode arrive as google / organic.

  • A prompt panel. Keep a fixed list of 20–50 real buyer questions and check monthly, in two or three assistants, whether and how your brand and pages are cited. Record the date, the assistant, the answer's sources and whether the facts about you are correct. Treat it as a qualitative signal: answers vary by user, location and time.

Worked example (illustrative)

A Riyadh B2B software company notices that AI answers to "best HR software for Saudi SMEs" cite two comparison articles and a Reddit thread — none mention it. Instead of buying placements, it (1) publishes an annual survey of Saudi SME HR practices with a transparent methodology, (2) pitches the findings to regional business media and HR newsletters, (3) offers its head of compliance as a source on labour-law changes, and (4) asks reviewers on two respected software review platforms to share honest feedback after onboarding, with no incentives. Over the following quarters it tracks referring domains, branded search impressions, AI-assistant referrals in GA4 and its prompt panel. The goal is not "an AI citation" — it is being the company that credible sources describe.

Where to go next

The course AI Search Optimization (ai-search-optimization-geo) covers AI crawler controls, content formatting for retrieval and AI visibility programmes in depth. This course stays focused on the off-page side: earning references that both people and systems trust.

Common mistakes

  • Buying "AI citation" or "LLM mention" packages — they are link spam with a new label.
  • Assuming unlinked mentions are worthless because they carry no link.
  • Treating one assistant's answer on one day as a trend.
  • Creating llms.txt files expecting Google rankings to change; Google Search ignores them.

Key takeaways

  • Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on the same core systems as Search; its May 2026 guidance says no special AI optimisation is needed beyond good SEO.
  • Earned links and reputable unlinked mentions both increase the chance you are retrieved and described accurately.
  • Inauthentic mentions and attempts to manipulate AI responses fall under Google spam policies.
  • Measure with Search Console (including the Generative AI performance report), a GA4 AI-assistant channel group and a fixed prompt panel.

Check your understanding

Quick questions to lock in the lesson. They don’t count towards your certificate.

  1. A vendor offers 'guaranteed ChatGPT and AI Overview citations' by posting your brand on 300 blogs. What is the best response?
  2. Where do clicks from Google's AI Overviews appear in GA4 by default?
  3. What does 'query fan-out' mean in Google's AI features?

Put it into practice

Build a 20-question prompt panel for your brand, run it in two assistants, and record which sources are cited and whether facts about you are correct.
