The primary category is your most important relevance choice

Your primary category tells Google what your business fundamentally is. It strongly influences which searches you appear for and which features your profile gets (booking buttons, menus, services lists). Google allows one primary category and additional secondary categories (up to nine additional at the time of writing).

Choosing categories: a step-by-step method

  1. List your core services and how customers search for them.
  2. Find the matching categories in GBP's category list. Categories are fixed — you must choose from Google's list, which differs by language and country.
  3. Research competitors: check the primary and secondary categories of businesses ranking in the pack for your main queries. (Browser extensions and local SEO tools can reveal categories; you can also see the primary category on the listing.)
  4. Pick the primary category that matches your main revenue service and the query you most want. For a clinic that mainly does orthodontics, "Orthodontist" may be better than "Dentist" — or vice versa, depending on demand and what the clinic mainly is.
  5. Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely provide as a meaningful part of the business. Irrelevant categories dilute relevance and can be removed by Google.
  6. Test and measure: category changes can shift visibility. Change one thing at a time and track rankings and actions over several weeks.

Business description

750 characters to explain what you do, who you serve and what makes you different. Write for people: natural language, key services, areas served, years in business, specialisms. Do not include URLs, promotional claims ("best", "cheapest"), or keyword lists. Google says the description is used for relevance only indirectly; its main job is to help customers choose.

Services

Add services for each category (Google suggests some; you can add custom ones). Include a short description and, where sensible, price or "from" price. Services help relevance and customer understanding.

Service: Emergency boiler repair
Description: Same-day call-outs across South Manchester for gas and combi boilers.
Gas Safe registered engineers. Call-out fee from £65 (illustrative).

Products

Products are useful not just for retailers: service businesses can list packages ("Wedding photography package — full day"). Include a photo, name, description, category, price (optional) and a link to the relevant page.

Attributes

Attributes describe features: accessibility (wheelchair-accessible entrance), amenities (Wi-Fi, parking), service options (delivery, dine-in, online appointments), payments, and identity-based attributes where available (e.g. women-owned — self-declared and region-dependent). Complete all that accurately apply; they help customers filter and appear in profile details.

Opening hours and special hours

  • Accurate regular hours are important — Google may show "Closed" at the time of search, which affects visibility and clicks for "open now" queries.
  • Set special hours for public holidays, Ramadan schedules, Eid, Christmas, New Year.
  • Use more hours for specific services (delivery hours, drive-through, senior hours) where available.

Keep the profile in sync with the website

Relevance is reinforced when your website says the same things: a page for each main service, the same business name, address and phone, and schema markup (LocalBusiness subtype) matching the profile.

Hands-on: category research sheet

Research categories systematically for your top three queries:

Query | Competitor | Rank in pack | Primary category | Secondary categories (if visible) | Notes

Collect the primary category from each competitor's listing (it is shown on the profile) and use a local SEO browser extension or tool to see secondary categories. Then count which primary category appears most among the top results for each query:

=QUERY(A2:F100, "select D, count(B) where A = 'dentist' group by D order by count(B) desc", 1)

A category that dominates the top results is strong evidence of what Google associates with that query — but only choose it if it truly describes your core business.

Service descriptions that help people and relevance

Write each service as: what it is + who it's for + a distinctive detail + price guidance where sensible, 1–3 sentences, no keyword lists. Keep services consistent with the matching page on your website so the two reinforce each other. If you connect your profile to Gemini, you can ask it to draft service descriptions from your website — then edit for accuracy and remove any claims you cannot back up (Google's policies prohibit misleading content).

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a broad primary category ("Store") when a specific one exists.
  • Adding many loosely related secondary categories.
  • Keyword-stuffed descriptions.
  • Forgetting holiday hours, leading to angry reviews from customers who find the shop closed.

Key takeaways

  • The primary category is the most important relevance choice; pick from Google's list based on core revenue and demand.
  • Add secondary categories only for genuine, meaningful services; test changes one at a time.
  • Complete services, products and attributes accurately; write a helpful, non-promotional description.
  • Keep regular and special hours accurate and the website consistent with the profile.

Check your understanding

Quick questions to lock in the lesson. They don’t count towards your certificate.

  1. How should you choose the primary category?
  2. A salon adds 'Hospital' and 'Software company' as secondary categories. The effect?
  3. Why set special hours for Eid or bank holidays?
