When LinkedIn Ads make sense

LinkedIn Ads let you target people by professional attributes — job title, function, seniority, industry, company, company size, skills and more. That precision is valuable for B2B, recruiting and professional education. Costs per click are often higher than on consumer social platforms, so LinkedIn Ads work best when the value of reaching the right professional is high — for example, B2B deals, high-value services or recruiting for specialized roles.

Campaign Manager structure (renamed in 2025)

Ad account -> Campaigns -> Ad sets -> Ads

In late 2025 LinkedIn renamed two levels in the Campaign Manager interface: what used to be called a campaign group is now a campaign, and what used to be called a campaign is now an ad set. Older guides, reports and the API may still use the old names.

  • Campaigns (formerly campaign groups) organize ad sets, for example by product or quarter, and can share budgets and schedules.
  • Ad sets (formerly campaigns) set the objective, audience, format, budget, bidding and schedule.
  • Ads are the creatives within an ad set.

Objectives

LinkedIn groups objectives by funnel stage (names may be updated):

StageObjectives
AwarenessBrand awareness
ConsiderationWebsite visits, engagement, video views
ConversionLead generation, website conversions, talent leads / job applicants

Choose the objective that matches the action you want; the platform optimizes delivery accordingly.

Targeting options

  • Professional attributes: job titles, functions, seniority, skills, years of experience.
  • Company attributes: company names, industries, company size, growth.
  • Demographics and location: location is required; other demographic options are limited in some regions.
  • Matched audiences: website retargeting (via the Insight Tag), contact list uploads, company list uploads (account-based marketing), and engagement retargeting (people who watched your videos or opened lead forms).
  • Lookalike or predictive audiences: availability evolves; check current options.

Avoid audiences that are too narrow (delivery struggles and costs rise) or too broad (relevance drops). Use the forecast panel as a guide.

Ad formats

FormatUse for
Single image adsSimple offers, awareness, content promotion
Carousel adsMultiple features, case studies, step-by-step stories
Video adsDemonstrations, thought leadership, customer stories
Document adsGuides and reports viewed in-feed; can be gated with a Lead Gen Form so members preview a set number of pages, then unlock the rest by submitting the form (not available for single-page documents)
Thought Leader AdsSponsoring posts by employees or other members, with their approval
BrandLinkVideo ads that run alongside content from selected publishers and creators (pre-roll and sponsorships); availability is limited
Text and spotlight adsDesktop right-rail placements (smaller budgets)
Message / conversation adsDirect messages to members' inboxes (restricted in some regions, including parts of Europe)
Event adsPromoting LinkedIn events
Connected TV and off-platform videoReaching professional audiences beyond the feed, where offered

Lead Gen Forms

Lead Gen Forms open inside LinkedIn, pre-filled with the member's profile information, so members can submit with minimal effort. Tips:

  • Ask only for fields you need (each extra field can reduce completion).
  • Include a clear value exchange (guide, webinar, demo).
  • Link your privacy policy (required) and add custom consent checkboxes where your legal basis requires them.
  • Sync leads to your CRM promptly and follow up quickly.
  • Expect lead quality to vary; qualify with a question or two if needed.

Measurement

  • Install the LinkedIn Insight Tag on your website (subject to consent requirements) to enable conversion tracking, website retargeting and demographics.
  • Consider the Conversions API for server-side conversion signals where appropriate.
  • Track pipeline and revenue in your CRM; B2B sales cycles are long, so look beyond cost per lead to cost per qualified opportunity.

AI-assisted campaigns: Accelerate

LinkedIn's Accelerate option uses AI to build and optimize a campaign from your inputs (a landing page, product details and objective): it suggests audiences, drafts creative and adjusts delivery automatically. It can save setup time for small teams, but review every generated ad for accuracy and brand voice, check which targeting it chose, and compare results against a manually built control before relying on it.

Measurement stack

  • Insight Tag on your site (behind your consent banner where required) for website conversions, retargeting and demographics.
  • Conversions API (CAPI) to send conversions from your server or CRM, including offline events such as qualified opportunities; LinkedIn deduplicates events received through both the tag and CAPI.
  • CRM integration to connect campaigns to pipeline and revenue where available.

Hands-on: campaign build sheet

CAMPAIGN: "Q4 Finance Close Guide - UK & UAE"
Objective: Lead generation
Ad set A: Finance function, Manager+ seniority, 200-1,000 employees, UK + UAE
Ad set B: Retargeting: website visitors (90 days) + video viewers 50%+
Format: Document ad, 12-page guide, 3 pages preview, Lead Gen Form to unlock
Form fields: First name, last name, work email, company, job title (pre-filled)
+ 1 qualifying question: "When is your next audit?" (dropdown)
Consent: privacy policy link; optional unticked marketing checkbox
Budget: enough per ad set to exit learning (check current minimums)
Tracking: Insight Tag + CAPI; form leads synced to CRM (e.g. HubSpot)
Success metric: cost per sales-qualified lead, then pipeline at 90 days
Creative tests: 2 cover designs x 2 intro texts

Budgets and bidding

LinkedIn applies minimum budgets and offers bidding options such as maximum delivery (automated), cost caps and manual bidding. Start with enough budget per campaign to exit the learning phase and gather meaningful data. Test creatives and audiences deliberately rather than launching many tiny campaigns.

Worked example: a B2B webinar campaign

A cybersecurity firm targets finance directors and IT managers at companies with 200–1,000 employees in the UK and UAE:

  • Objective: lead generation.
  • Format: document ad previewing a checklist + Lead Gen Form for webinar registration.
  • Audience: job functions (finance, IT) + seniority (manager and above) + company size + locations.
  • Retargeting: people who opened the form but did not submit, and website visitors.
  • Measurement: registrations, attendance, sales-qualified leads and pipeline in the CRM.

Policies and compliance

LinkedIn's advertising policies restrict certain content and categories (for example, financial products, healthcare and political content have specific rules, and some categories are prohibited). Ads must not use discriminatory targeting for employment, housing or credit where laws prohibit it. Review policies before launching.

Common mistakes

  • Audiences so narrow that ads barely deliver.
  • Long Lead Gen Forms with unnecessary fields.
  • Judging campaigns only on cost per lead.
  • No follow-up process for leads.
  • Installing the Insight Tag without handling consent.

Key takeaways

  • LinkedIn Ads suit B2B, recruiting and high-value offers thanks to professional targeting.
  • Structure (renamed 2025): ad account, campaigns, ad sets, ads; choose objectives by funnel stage.
  • Document ads can be gated with Lead Gen Forms; Thought Leader Ads and BrandLink add person- and publisher-led reach.
  • Review AI-built Accelerate campaigns, and measure pipeline with the Insight Tag, Conversions API and CRM.

Check your understanding

Quick questions to lock in the lesson. They don’t count towards your certificate.

  1. Which targeting approach is most distinctive to LinkedIn Ads?
  2. What is a key benefit of Lead Gen Forms?
  3. A campaign has a low cost per lead but produces no qualified opportunities. What should the team evaluate?
  4. After the 2025 Campaign Manager rename, which level holds the objective, audience, budget and bidding?
