In a nation of approximately 75 million internet users, sources confirmed that TikTok app and its website were already inaccessible to a few of the people in Pakistan.
India and a few neighboring countries had already banned TikTok and 57 other applications including Bigo developed by Chinese firms, reason being some serious concerns about cyber security. TikTok following in India prior to the ban was huge i.e. over 200 million monthly active. It was the biggest market outside of China. Similarly TikTok is extremely popular in Pakistan while United Stated is the biggest market by revenue for TikTok, where the application’s future stays uncertain.
It has come as a huge shock for TikTok lovers around the country that Pakistan has banned this popular short video application citing circulation of videos that it deemed “immoral and indecent”.
PTA – Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, that looks after the country’s telecommunication department, has given a statement recently in which it was clearly mentioned that TikTok had been given ultimatums and warnings repeatedly for months, but even then it “failed to comply with the instructions, therefore, directions were issued for blocking of TikTok application in the country.”
PTA has also given another statement which said, “Number of complaints from different segments of the society”, which clearly shows that a lot of complaints were being received by them over the period of time regarding these videos.
The actual statement issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, that is known to be the cause of ban states; “TikTok has been informed that the authority is open for engagement and will review its decision subject to a satisfactory mechanism by TikTok to moderate unlawful content”.
This movement has not only started in Pakistan, but in other South Asian countries as well who claimed that the TikTok application is raising serious concerns due to the nature of videos being uploaded over this app provided by ByteDance.
